Leh, April 21: In a major push towards sustainable mobility, the Government of India has sanctioned 33 electric buses for the Union Territory of Ladakh under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.
Officials said the fleet will consist of 7-metre electric buses, specially designed to navigate Ladakh’s challenging terrain and road conditions. The buses are expected to be delivered within a month and are set to significantly improve public transport in the region while promoting clean energy.
The initiative aims to reduce pollution, enhance connectivity, and provide a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for residents, particularly in remote and high-altitude areas.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena expressed gratitude to the Centre for approving the long-pending demand, calling it a milestone in Ladakh’s journey towards sustainable development.
“The introduction of electric buses is a significant step towards building an eco-friendly public transport system. It reflects our commitment to protecting Ladakh’s fragile environment while improving accessibility and connectivity. These buses will reduce carbon emissions and offer an affordable, reliable transport option for the people,” he said.
The move aligns with the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop Ladakh as a carbon-neutral region through sustainable initiatives.
Given Ladakh’s ecologically sensitive Trans-Himalayan landscape, the deployment of electric buses is expected to play a crucial role in cutting emissions and conserving the environment. The compact size of the buses has been tailored to ensure smooth operation on narrow and rugged roads.
The UT Administration has been focusing on reducing dependence on fossil fuels by promoting green alternatives such as electric mobility and solar energy. The addition of this e-bus fleet is expected to further strengthen public transport infrastructure while supporting environmentally responsible growth in the region.(KINS)
