Srinagar, Jan 21: Students selected under government quota Thursday alleged that they were disqualified by a private coaching institute here in Kashmir capital Srinagar.
Under government quota, students who mainly fall under Below Poverty Line, Orphan or other categories are being selected for the class 11th, 12th and entrance coaching. Directorate of Education sends a list of these students to coaching institutes where they get coaching.
Under norms, every coaching institute is supposed to accommodate these ‘poor’ students in their institutions.
Some students along with their parents who hail from far flung areas visited the office of News Agency Kashmir News Trust. They alleged that ‘Rise Institute’ located at Tulsi Bagh Srinagar disqualified them, even though they fall under government quota.
“The Rise Institute conducted our examination and we were asked to vacate from the Institute. They informed us that many students have been disqualified,” the students said.
Some of them identified themselves as Shahid Gul, a resident of Chek Pohru Budgam, Tahir Mohiuddin, Danish Muhammad, Muhammad Aamir and Waseem Ahmed, all residents of Kupwara.
An official from another Coaching Centre said that government sends list of students and they conduct their examination. “As per their level of intelligence we grade them and offer coaching to them, but we don’t disqualify them even if they are week.”
Director School Education Kashmir, Muhmamad Younis Malik said that no private coaching institute can disqualify students who fall under government quota. “Please send them to me, I will look into the matter,” Malik said.
When contacted, Mubeen Masoodi, a faculty member from the ‘Rise Institute’ said that every coaching institute has its policy. “We conduct test of every student and don’t admit those who get disqualified. Passing the test is mandatory and we are following the Institute’s policy in letter and spirit,” he said adding that this session Directorate of School Education has sent 83 such students among which examination of some students is yet to be taken.
