Anantnag, May 03: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and District Vice President Anantnag, Imran Amin Shah, has expressed gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the concerned MLA for sanctioning ₹4.50 crore for key developmental works in Anantnag town.
The sanctioned projects include the beautification of a tributary of the Jhelum River from Ashajipora to Mehandikadal, estimated at ₹2.00 crore, and the restoration of the historic Sherbagh Spring, with an allocation of ₹2.50 crore. Both sites had reportedly fallen into disrepair due to prolonged neglect and political apathy during previous regimes, including alleged mismanagement by the former Chairman of the Municipal Council Anantnag.
Shah welcomed the renewed focus of the present government led by the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, stating that these initiatives reflect a sincere commitment toward reviving the historic town and restoring its pristine character.
Taking a critical view of the previous regime, Shah remarked that despite claims of substantial funding, the ground reality in Anantnag remained unsatisfactory. He highlighted issues such as choked drains, dilapidated lanes, and neglected link roads as indicators of gross mismanagement and alleged misuse of public funds. He called for a thorough probe by investigating agencies to ensure accountability and transparency.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to holistic development, Shah stated that under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, several projects across Anantnag are expected to be redeveloped and modernized. However, he urged the Hon’ble Chief Minister to consider additional funding, noting that the currently sanctioned ₹4.50 crore may not be sufficient for comprehensive restoration of Sherbagh Spring and the Jhelum tributary.
He emphasized the need for a more substantial and humane approach to urban development in Anantnag, ensuring sustainable infrastructure and improved living conditions for residents.
Shah made these remarks while addressing a workers’ function held at Deva Colony, Janglatmandi, in Anantnag today.
