Srinagar, April 27: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has introduced high-yielding Saanen goats, widely known as the “Milk Queen,” at its Mountain Research Centre for Sheep and Goat (MRCS&G) in Shuhama. The initiative is aimed at enhancing milk production and promoting urban dairy goat units across the Valley.
The Saanen goat, regarded as the highest milk-producing goat breed in the world, is expected to perform efficiently under the temperate climatic conditions of Kashmir, which closely resemble those of Switzerland, its native origin.
Dr. Parvaiz Ahmed Reshi, Senior Scientist and Head of MRCS&G, SKUAST-K, stated that the breed has shown promising adaptability, along with encouraging growth and milk production under temperate environments. He also highlighted that Saanen goats are known for their higher twinning rate, commonly producing two kids per birth, thereby increasing overall productivity.
He further emphasized that systematic efforts will be undertaken to evaluate and promote this elite dairy breed, with a focus on genetic upgradation of local goat populations. The initiative is expected to significantly improve milk availability and provide a major boost to the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kashmir.
