Srinagar, April 20: Many passengers are feared dead and others injured after a public transport bus overturned near village Kanote on the Ramnagar-Udhampur road early Monday morning, officials said.
An official said that, the bus, bearing registration number JK14D 2121, was traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur when it fell approximately 70 feet down a roadside slope. “Many passengers are feared to have died in the incident, and many others having sustained injuries of varied nature.”
“Rescue efforts are underway, and the situation is being closely monitored.”
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh took to X to confirm he had spoken with the administration regarding the incident. He said, “I just spoke to DC Udhampur, Sh Minga Sherpa, following a tragic road accident at Kanote involving a public transport bus. Rescue operations have been immediately undertaken. Heavy casualties are expected. All possible assistance is being provided, and seriously injured individuals will be airlifted. I am in constant contact with local administration and our team led by Sh Rajinder Sharma.”
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed his grief. “Tragic road accident in Udhampur is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to bereaved families. May God grant them strength. Praying for speedy recovery of injured. I have directed district administration, Police, SDRF, and Health Department to provide every possible assistance to those affected,” he wrote in an X post.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the accident on X, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. He affirmed that the government stands firmly with the victims and their families in this hour of grief and that all necessary assistance is being extended.
Following the accident, police and local administration teams launched a rescue operation at the site, evacuating the injured to nearby medical facilities. Arrangements are being made to airlift critically injured passengers to higher Medical centres.
