Budgam, April 15: In a commendable initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity and supporting persons with disabilities, the Rashtriya Rifles (53 RR) organized a special cricket match for visually challenged players at Government Higher Secondary School Nagam on Wednesday.
The match featured players associated with the J&K Blind Welfare Trust, with two teams—Vision Warriors and Zeba Aapa Warriors—competing in a spirited contest.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, school staff, and local residents of Nagam and adjoining areas, highlighting the true spirit of sportsmanship and inclusion. After winning the toss, Vision Warriors opted to bat first and posted a target of 68 runs. In response, Zeba Aapa Warriors delivered an impressive performance, chasing the target in just 6.4 overs to secure a convincing victory.
Adil Ahmad emerged as the star performer of the match, scoring an unbeaten 35 runs and leading his team to victory.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Commanding Officer 53 RR Nagam Col Nitin Sharma, Second-in-Command Lt Col Mohsin Kamal, SDM Chadoora Primrose Bashir, Principal BHSS Nagam Syed Muzaffar Rizvi, noted social activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat, Director Koshish Dr Rouf Malik, Vice Principal J D Khan, Chairman Khyber Girls School Shanawaz Sultan, and Chairman J&K Blind Welfare Trust Showkat Ahmad Lone.
Speaking on the occasion, Showkat Ahmad Lone expressed gratitude to the Army, school authorities, and organizers for conducting the event. He further revealed that the Deputy Commissioner Budgam and 53 RR have assured the establishment of a skill training institute for visually challenged youth in the district in the coming months.
Second-in-Command Lt Col Mohsin Kamal distributed cash prizes to both the winning and runner-up teams. Trophies and medals were also awarded to players and volunteers by the dignitaries present.
Commanding Officer Col Nitin Sharma reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to supporting visually challenged youth through sports and skill development initiatives. He stated that more such programs will be organized in the coming months to empower and engage the differently-abled community.
The event not only showcased the talent and determination of visually challenged players but also sent a strong message of inclusion, empowerment, and community support.
