Srinagar, April 24: Even as the tragic attack in Pahalgam stunned the region, Kashmir’s tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience, with thousands of tourists continuing to explore the Valley’s famed landscapes. From Sonamarg to Doodhpathri and the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg, tourist movement remains strong, defying concerns of a mass exodus.
Director Tourism, Raja Yaqoob, told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the ground reality stands in stark contrast to some media reports suggesting widespread departures. “We currently have more than 1,300 tourists in Srinagar. Yesterday, over 5,000 people rode the Gondola in Gulmarg. Today, 4,683 tourists booked tickets for the ride. This shows that confidence in Kashmir’s tourism circuit is intact,” he said.
Tour operators also confirmed that bookings have remained steady post-attack. “Cabs are still ferrying visitors to popular sites. Tourists are going to Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, and Gulmarg as usual. The talk of mass tourist flight has been blown way out of proportion,” said a leading tourism stakeholder.
What’s stood out most, however, is the overwhelming support shown by locals to reassure visitors. In the face of tragedy, Kashmiris have embraced tourists with extra care, providing a sense of safety and solidarity.
“I have never felt so cared for in any tourist destination,” said Prerna Rajput, a tourist from Pune enjoying the snow in Sonamarg. “Locals constantly check if we are fine, if we need anything. It’s really heartening.”
Rahul Sharma, who stayed on in Gulmarg after the incident, echoed a similar view. “Yes, the Pahalgam attack shocked everyone, but the way the people here looked after us made all the difference. We never felt unsafe.”
Several other tourists shared stories of local shopkeepers, hoteliers, and guides going out of their way to provide comfort and reassurance. Karan Mehta, who is vacationing in Srinagar, said, “We received calls from hotel staff just to check on our well-being. That tells you everything you need to know about Kashmir’s spirit.”
Officials believe that the way locals stood firmly behind their guests in a moment of crisis has sent a powerful message to the rest of the world. “Tourists are not just safe here, they’re being embraced. That’s what defines Kashmir,” said an officer from the tourism department.
As spring blooms across the Valley and meadows turn lush with color, tourists are making the most of the season. While the pain of Pahalgam lingers, the enduring spirit of the Valley, rooted in warmth and resilience, continues to shine through. [KNT]
