New Delhi: The Supreme Court in its order on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Sufiyan in a case relating to the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporter during the West Bengal post-poll violence. A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Ajay Rastogi and also comprising Justice Abhay S Oka, passed the order and granted anticipatory bail to Sufiyan in the case registered against him. While allowing the plea filed by Sufiyan, the Supreme Court, in its order today also imposed several conditions on him. Sufiyan, who is West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s election agent accused of killing a BJP supporter, Debabrata Maiti at Chillogram in Nandigram after the results were declared. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had yesterday complained about state police lodging FIRs (First Information Report) against witnesses in the case against Sufiyan. The Apex Court granted interim anticipatory bail after hearing an appeal filed by Sufiyan, against an order of the Calcutta High Court rejecting his plea seeking anticipatory bail in the case. The alleged murder case is being investigated by the probe agency, CBI, in which, Sufiyan is an accused. The CBI is investigating the killing of the BJP worker in the Nandigram constituency which took place during the post poll violence in West Bengal after the Mamata Banerjee-led, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won in the State assembly polls in West Bengal in May 2021.
