Srinagar: Activists of Dalit Janjagrat Mission led by its’ President Suhail Mir on Friday protested against civilian killings by unknown gunmen in various parts of Kashmir.
The activists strongly condemned the killing of civilians during the protest at Srinagar Press Enclave.
“Violence or civilian killings is simply unacceptable in all situations. This will only bring death and destruction to Kashmir,” Suhail Mir told reporters.
“The recurring violence during past three decades has only added to the miseries and sufferings of people and worsened their economic condition,” he added.
Authorities must take immediate steps to stop the unabated killings and ensure ex-gratia relief to the victims’ kin, Suhail said.
“The culprits who mercilessly killed the civilians in cold-blood must be brought to book. Also, Jammu and Kashmir Police should be given facilities like other security forces,” he added.
Dalit Janjagrat Mission activists held a candle light protest against civilian killings at Zero bridge Srinagar and extended solidarity with the victims’ relatives.
Notably, Dalit Janjagrat Mission strives for the upliftment of poor and needy families.
“Like elsewhere in the country, poor and underprivileged families in Jammu and Kashmir should be provided with free power and ration as people have suffered immensely during past three decades of ongoing turmoil,” Suhail added.
Mir also appealed government to resolve long pending demands of home guard, daily wagers and employees of NIT Srinagar and regularize their services.
“During winters prices of essentials usually go up leaving poor people suffering. Therefore government must put a check on sharing prices,” he added.
