Hari Krishna Dwivedi has been appointed as the new Bengal chief secretary. The current chief secretary, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, will now serve as chief advisor to Mamata Banerjee.
Amid the ongoing tussle over the extension of Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay’s tenure, the Centre on Monday appointed 1988 IAS batch officer Hari Krishna Dwivedi as the new chief secretary to Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Hari Krishna Dwivedi is currently serving as the home secretary of the state. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has appointed Alapan Bandyopadhyay as new chief advisor to the chief minister.
Earlier reports said that Alapan Bandyopadhyay’s tenure as chief secretary, slated to end on Monday, has been extended by three months. However, the Centre put the speculations to rest and appointed Hari Krishna Dwivedi as the new Bengal chief secretary.
Reacting to the development, a miffed Mamata Banerjee termed the decision as autocratic and said that “the central government was behaving like Adolf Hitler and Stalin”.
The chief minister has, however, refused to let go of the man who has come to be known as the face of Bengal’s fight against Covid-19.
CM Mamata Banerjee has announced that Alapan Bandyopadhyay will now serve as chief advisor to the CM from Tuesday.
“He [Alapan Bandyopadhyay] will join as the chief advisor to the CM from tomorrow. We want his services for the pandemic. Everybody knows how he worked and that’s why we are safe today. He must continue his service to Bengal and the country,” Mamata Banerjee said.
