Srinagar, Oct 16: The Kashmir Copper Workers Trade Union on Friday demanded a ban on machine made copper items and pressed for taking action against those who are making copper utensils on machines , which they described defaming the centuries old copper handicraft art.
In a statement, the trade union said that a condolence meeting was held to mourn the death of former chairman of the union late Mehraj ud din Kawa.
The meeting was presided over by the incumbent Chairman of the Union Mohd Yousuf Kakroo and was attended by the senior members of the union.
The statement said that the issue of the substandard copper items made on machines was discussed and concluded that it is not only aimed at defaming one of the oldest Kashmir craft , but also an attack on their livelihood .
It was said that some people are floating fake rumors that the Copper Act 2016 has been abolished, which is a fake and baseless claim.
According to the statement,they have already met Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, who has asked General Manager DIC Srinagar to submit a report regarding the issue via letter no. DCS/20/ADC/ETT/PC dated 09/10/2020.
They requested the authorities to look into the gross violation of the copper act 2016 and also requested the police to take action against those who are involved in its manufacture and trade.
They also demanded a total ban on the import of machine made copper items from outside Jammu and Kashmir, the statement reads. (KDC)
