About 18 families evacuated to safer places
Srinagar, June 12 : A
45-year-old woman was killed and two others sustained injuries in
cross-border shelling along the border in Uri sector of north Kashmir’s
Baramulla district on Friday.
Station
House Officer (SHO) Uri Mohammad Ashraf said that 45-year-old lady
Akhtar Begum wife of Zahoor Ahmad Chaichi of Bhatgran Uri died on the
spot after a motor shell fired by Pakistani forces landed near her house
in the area Friday afternoon.
Sources
said that in the cross border shelling two other people have received
minor injuries including a 30-year-old woman identified as Parveena
Begum wife of Shabir Ahmad Shiekh of Nambla Fatawali, while several
houses suffered minor damage.
The
exchange of bullets and shells between Indian and Pakistani has created
panic among people on both sides of LoC, sources added.
Meanwhile
Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Rajesh Kalia in a statement issued said
“Today in the morning at 8:20 am, Pakistan initiated an unprovoked
ceasefire violation along the LoC in Rampur sector of Uri in north
Kashmir’s Baramulla district by firing mortars and other
weapons.“Befitting response is being given,”
Meanwhile,
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Uri Reyaz Ahmad paid a visit to the
border area in Hajipir Sector in order to take stock of the prevailing
situation arising out of continued cross LoC shelling.
Keeping
in view the overall situation and the safety of human lives, SDM
evacuated about 18 families belonging to silkot and other adjoining
villages to safer places.
On the
occasion, SDM said that satisfactory arrangements which include
essential commodities and other requirements of day to day life have
been made for these families. He also said that the administration has
geared up all the preparations in case of any exigency. He also directed
the concerned authorities to keep a strict vigil on the situation and
make all requisite arrangements for the rehabilitation of the people who
have left their homes and are presently accommodated by the
administration.
Pertinently, five
residential houses were damaged last week in the Hajipeer sector after
Indo-Pak armies exchanged gunfire along the line of control (LOC). (KINS)
